Atareta Poananga - Ngati Porou, Te Whanau-A-Apanui, Ngati Kahungunu, Rangitane and Ngati Kauwhata
Atareta has worked in the Maori community at a whanau, hapu, Iwi
and national level all my life. Her passion is constitutional change
from a Te Tiriti o Waitangi perspective. Her legal background focuses
a legislative change. She is involved in local government as a
Counsellor of a rural ward for three terms Gisborne District Council,
and as an elected Tairawhiti Health Board member and Chair of
Tairawhiti REAP.
Atareta stood as a Maori Party candidate for Ikaroa-Rawhiti in the recent election.
Atareta's involvement with the Community Sector Taskforce has been on-going since 2000 with the original working party established by the Government. Atareta stated that “this is an important kaupapa that must be progressed so that Te Tiriti is a force for unity for tangata whenua and tangata tiriti.” Atareta is currently a Taskforce member for Tangata Whenua.
